Dark Bond Chapter 3-into the Blight
Here’s Chapter 3 of "The Dark Bond":
---Chapter 3: Into the Blight
The sun rose over Thornshade, but for Lena, it brought no warmth. The memory of the shadow’s voice lingered, chilling her to the core. She couldn’t shake the feeling that something was watching her, waiting for her to falter.Determined not to become a victim of the bond—or a pawn of the darkness—Lena decided to take control. If the Veil was thinning and the Blight was tied to the bond, she needed answers. Answers that couldn’t be found in the village. The Blight was a forbidden place, a festering wound in the heart of the forest where nothing grew, and no one returned. But Lena’s instincts told her it was where the bond wanted her to go—and if she could face whatever lay there, she might find a way to break free.---Lena packed quickly: her bow, a quiver of arrows, a hunting knife, and a small satchel of provisions. As she prepared to leave, a knock at the door startled her.It was Edrin.“You’re going, aren’t you?” he asked, his voice low.“I don’t have a choice,” Lena replied, pulling her cloak tight.“I’m coming with you.”Lena shook her head. “No. The bond is my burden. I can’t drag you into this.”Edrin’s jaw tightened. “You’re not dragging me anywhere. If the Blight is waking up, it’s not just your fight—it’s all of ours. Besides, you’ll need someone to watch your back.”Lena hesitated, but the determination in Edrin’s eyes left no room for argument. She nodded, and together, they set off toward the forest.---The journey to the Blight was grueling. The deeper they ventured, the more unnatural the forest became. Trees twisted at impossible angles, their bark blackened and cracked. The air was thick, almost suffocating, and the light seemed to fade, even though it was midday. They walked in silence, the only sound the crunch of dead leaves beneath their boots. Lena’s arm burned fiercely now, the mark pulsing in time with her heartbeat. She could feel the bond pulling her forward, guiding her like an invisible tether. Finally, they reached the edge of the Blight. The ground was barren, the trees reduced to skeletal husks. A foul stench hung in the air, and the silence was deafening.“This place…” Edrin whispered, his voice barely audible. “It’s like death itself.”Lena stepped forward, her resolve hardening. “Stay close. And keep your weapon ready.”They moved cautiously, the weight of the Blight pressing down on them. Lena could feel the bond reacting to the place—pulling stronger, but also trembling, as if in fear.It didn’t take long for the first signs of danger to appear. Shadows flickered at the edges of their vision, darting between the trees. At first, Lena thought it was a trick of the light, but then one of the shadows surged forward. It was a creature, but not like any animal Lena had seen. Its body was a mass of writhing darkness, its eyes glowing an eerie white. It let out a guttural screech and charged.Lena reacted on instinct, loosing an arrow that struck the creature in the chest. It dissolved into black smoke, but more emerged from the shadows, their numbers growing.“Lena, there’s too many!” Edrin shouted, slashing at one with his sword. The bond flared in Lena’s arm, and for the first time, she felt it respond to her will. Shadows coiled around her fingers like tendrils, and as she raised her hand, they lashed out, striking the creatures and dissolving them into nothingness.Edrin stared in shock. “What—how did you do that?”Lena’s chest heaved, her mind reeling. “I don’t know. I just… felt it.”The bond had given her power, but it came with a price. She could feel the darkness seeping into her thoughts, whispering promises of more strength if she would only let go.---At the heart of the Blight, they found what they were looking for: another altar, larger and more intricate than the one Lena had seen before. This one radiated malice, its runes glowing with a sickly green light. Before Lena could approach, the shadows gathered, forming a figure more solid and terrifying than the one from her dreams. It towered over them, its eyes burning like twin suns.“Bearer of the bond,” it intoned, its voice shaking the ground. “You have come to claim your fate.”
“What is this bond?” Lena demanded, her voice steady despite the fear coursing through her. “Why me?”The figure laughed, a deep, resonant sound. “The bond chooses those with potential. You are a bridge, hunter—a vessel for the Veil’s power. But power is never free.”
“I don’t want your power,” Lena spat. The figure leaned closer. “It is too late for that. The bond is yours, and with it, the curse. Embrace it, or be consumed.”Lena’s mark flared painfully, and she dropped to her knees. The figure extended a hand, its shadowy fingers curling toward her.Edrin stepped in front of her, his sword raised. “Stay away from her!”The figure’s eyes narrowed. “The mortal dares to defy me? Foolish.”Before it could strike, Lena forced herself to her feet, the bond surging within her. She felt its darkness coursing through her veins, but this time, she didn’t resist. She shaped it, wielded it like a weapon, and sent a wave of shadow crashing into the figure. It roared, the force of the attack driving it back. But as it dissipated, its laughter echoed through the Blight.“You cannot fight what you are, bearer. The bond will claim you in the end.”As the figure vanished, the altar crumbled, and the oppressive energy of the Blight began to fade.---Lena and Edrin returned to the village at dawn, exhausted and battered but alive.“You saved us,” Edrin said as they crossed the threshold.Lena looked at her arm, the mark now darker and more intricate than before. “No,” she said quietly. “This is just the beginning.”
